The Sacred Dreams Project is a partnership between the WeAreOne Alliance and Tererai Trent International to fund the drilling of water wells and building fenced, irrigated gardens with water storage tanks at schools and communities throughout the rural area of Matau in Zimbabwe. The delegation of supporters on these biannual mission trips participates in a cultural exchange. They offer sweat equity to build the gardens and they provide funding for supplies through the trip’s tuition cost. In return, delegation participants receive leadership training and teachings from Dr. Tererai Trent and the Honorable Heather Mizeur and enriching exchanges with the students and people of Matau.

We fly into Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, where we overnight at Dr. Trent’s homestead in the city. We then take private group transportation to Matau, which is about a 5 hour drive. Matau is where our humanitarian work is based. We will reintegrate in Harare before flying back to the United States.

Truly, this trip is priceless. But we have assigned a $6300 per person cost. This covers your lodging, meals, and ground transportation while in Zimbabwe for 10 days. You will also benefit from leadership teachings from Dr. Tererai Trent and the Honorable Heather Mizeur as well as a cultural exchange with the students and people of Matau. This tuition amount includes a per person donation to the significant costs of supplies for digging the well sites and building the irrigated gardens. Some may choose to raise a portion of their tuition from family and friends who are interested in donating to the supply costs of this project. We can work with you on a plan for this.

You are responsible for your airfare from the U.S. to Harare, Zimbabwe; travel insurance; a single-entry visa (typically $30-$55), and spending money for personal items at markets. Depending on your flight options, you may choose to take a flight into Johannesburg and overnight in an airport hotel before flying into Harare. The airport hotel is an optional cost should you choose to do that. You may also decide to add on additional adventures while in Africa. The cost and planning of that is up to you.

The cost and time commitment of doing that is completely up to you, but the investment in the plane ticket and the length of travel to get to this incredible continent definitely lends itself to an extended stay. Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is one of the most stunning natural wonders of the world. We can make recommendations in nearby South Africa for exploring game drives (safaris) near Kruger National Park, enjoying Cape Town and/or the surrounding wine region. When we come on these trips, we definitely add some additional days for holiday fun and exploration.

The spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are secured by paying a deposit. If paying by credit card, we ask for a $1343 non-refundable deposit to hold your spot. After paying your deposit, you will have five payments of $1033 due in full by May 31, 2026, which includes a small fee to cover our costs for use of credit card services.

Your non-refundable deposit is $1300 will hold your spot. The spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. After paying your deposit, you will have five payments of $1000 due in full by May 31, 2026. Your checks can be made out to the WeAreOne Alliance and sent to P.O. Box 851, Chestertown, MD 21620.

We will work with you to establish either 5 monthly payments or 3 installments for the remainder of your tuition balance.

We stay at the rural homestead of Dr. Tererai Trent. In addition to her own personal home, she has three other communal living buildings on her property in Matau.

Our sleeping arrangements in the village consists of open room sleeping quarters shared by a few people, sleeping on mattresses on the floor. A bathroom is available in each group accommodation. These spaces are clean and safe but also very simple. Adjust your expectations as a first world traveler. We are going to be among the people of a rural third world country. If this makes you uncomfortable, we are not the right trip for you.

Yes, men and women are both invited to participate on this trip.

Meals in Matau are delicious but simple and tend to repeat a few standard staples. Cooking is done over an open fire. Sadza is a corn grit that is the basis of many meals. Baked beans are another regular offering, as are sausages of various kinds — chicken, beef, pork. Cabbage is the most plentiful of vegetable offerings.

You just don’t eat the sausages. But no special additional foods are offered. You are invited to have larger servings of the grits, beans, and cabbage.

Bottled water is provided for our delegation throughout the trip.

Shona is the native language spoken in Matau but Dr. Trent and many of the leaders of her non-profit organization speak fluent English and translate for us.

You should review the suggested vaccine schedule for travel to Zimbabwe and determine whether you want or need any supplemental immunity protection. This is entirely discretionary based on personal preferences.

As of right now, our intention is to do this biannually, so our trip after 2026 would be in 2028.
